Working Hard or Working Smart?

Spend more time on activities that will lead to success. Draw a pie chart and label the slices of the pie with your various job search activities, such as in-person networking, online networking, online job search, researching companies, and job fairs. If you are spending most of your time on online searches, make that the largest slice of the pie, followed by the activity that comes in second for your time, and so on.

Next, compare those slices of the pie to statistics on how people best find jobs. If you’re not spending the majority of your time on what works, adjust your focus. Re-slice your pie to reflect best-practice job search activities (see the preceding tip, “Use All Avenues for an Effective Search”), and then “eat” your pie, one slice at a time!
